What is an Standard Operating Procedure?

A standard operating procedure (SOP) is a document that contains detailed instructions on how to perform a particular task, function, or process.

SOPs describe how laboratory personnel deal with the chemical and physical hazards encountered in the laboratory. This includes concentrations and volumes of chemicals or solutions, engineering controls, storage and transportation procedures, and personal protective equipment.

How are SOPs helpful? What’s the purpose for an SOP?

SOPs function as training documents to provide standardized training to all lab employees or students. Additionally, SOPs provided uniformity and continuity among researchers and lab assistants.

Are SOPs required?

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)  and EHS require a written SOP for any work with regulated chemicals in laboratories.
