Many fire related incidents on college campuses are related to social events particularly at Greek organizations. As a preventative measure EHS inspects these facilities prior to social events to make sure all fire safety equipment is in working order and the building conforms to fire safety codes. The items and areas examined are as follows:

  • Fire extinguishers
  • Exit lights
  • Emergency lights
  • Mechanical rooms
  • Ceiling integrity
  • Electrical hazards
  • Laundry areas
  • Smoke alarms
  • Kitchen hoods
  • Exit doors
  • Emergency evacuation and occupancy signs
  • General housekeeping
  • Decorations
  • Structures

Usually an initial inspection is conducted by an EHS representative. Once repairs and corrective actions are completed the social event is approved by EHS and then the approval process moves forward through the other criteria.
