General Shop Safety Practices
- Eye protection shall be worn at all times in the woodworking shop.
- Loose clothing and jewelry shall not be worn.
- Loose hair should be restrained.
- In most cases gloves should not be worn as they could cause hazards being pulled into the point of operation.
- Always review standard operating procedures for any piece of equipment or tool that you are not familiar with.
- Standard operating procedures should be immediately available for all tools and equipment.
- Specific operating rules should be developed for all tools and equipment.
- Shop access shall be controlled. Only authorized persons should have access.
- Authorized persons shall have shop safety training and approved from the shop supervisor to work in the area.
- An inventory of shop tools and equipment shall be maintained.
- Eye washing stations and other first aid equipment and supplied shall be provided as specified by EHS.
- Use equipment only for the purpose for which its design is intended.
- Operated the tool at the speed and tension specified by the manufacturer.
- Remove defective, cracked or worn parts from service.
- Maintain sharp and clean parts.
- When provided use equipment with an exhaust or dust collection system.
- Check to verify that guards, guides, counterweights, etc. are properly adjusted.
- Avoid overheating equipment.
- Follow lockout/tagout procedures during service and repair.
- Never reach under or into an area you cants see clearly.
- Direct operation away from your body.
- Avoid crowded and cluttered work areas.
- Provide adequate ventilation.
- Make sure combustible or flammable material is located away from spark production operations.
